Liberal Arts Blog — Aesop’s Fables (Part I) — Lion and the Bulls, Tortoise and the Hare, Wolf and the Lamb

Liberal Arts Blog — Tuesday is the Joy of Literature, Language, Culture, and Religion Day

Today’s Topic — Aesop’s Fables (Part I) — Lion and the Bulls, Tortoise and the Hare, Wolf and the Lamb

Anything worth saying about mankind was said better in Aesop’s Fables. This is why Abraham Lincoln said it was his favorite book (after the Bible, of course). Where do you think he got his gift for pithy sayings and colorful anecdotes? Lincoln’s favorite fable of all was the Lion and the Bulls. Today a few notes on that fable as well as two others. Next week three more. Experts please correct, elaborate, elucidate.

THE LION AND THE BULLS — United we stand, divided we fall

1. A single bull is easy prey to a lion, but united the bulls are invincible.

2. The lion waits until the bulls quarrel amongst themselves and separate.

3. He picks them off one by one.

THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE — perseverance triumphs

1. At the starting gate, the hare had the clear advantage.

2. But he squandered it by taking a nap.

3. Hard work and perseverance can trump the natural advantages of talent at birth.

THE WOLF AND THE LAMB — might makes right

1. The wolf gives reasons for eating the lamb.

2. The lamb refutes them.

3. The wolf eats the lamb anyway — might makes right.

Do you have a favorite fable from Aesop or any other source?

YOUR TURN

Please share the coolest thing you learned this week related to words, language, literature, religion, culture. Or, even better, the coolest or most important thing you learned in your life related to Words, Language, Literature (eg. quotes, poetry, vocabulary) that you have not yet shared.

This is your chance to make someone else’s day. Or to cement in your own mind something that you might otherwise forget. Or to think more deeply than otherwise about something dear to your heart. Continuity is key to depth of thought.
