Liberal Arts Blog: Friday is the Joy of Art, Architecture, Design, Film, and All Things Visual Day

Today’s Topic: Renoir (Part Two): Portrait of Irene Cahen d’Anvers (1880), Lise Sewing (1866), Self Portrait (1870) Last time, three paintings by Renoir: “Au Bal Du Moulin De La Galette,” “The Pont Neuf,” and “Luncheonof the Boating Party.” Today, two portraits and a self-portrait. Experts — please chime in. Correct, elaborate, elucidate.

IRENE. A JEWISH HEIRESS, WAS 8 YEARS OLD WHEN THIS PORTRAIT WAS DONE, HER SON, NISSIM, WAS A FIGHTER PILOT WHO DIED IN COMBAT IN WORLD WAR ONE, HER DAUGHTER, BEATRICE AND HER CHILDREN WERE KILLED AT AUSCHWITZ

1.“After the fall of France, the painting was looted from Chateau de Chambord by the Nazis. Like many other important pieces of European art, it became a part of Herman Goring’s personal collection, Göring later traded the painting with Gustav Rochiltz for a Florentine Tondo.”

2. “In 1946, Portrait of Irène Cahen d’Anvers resurfaced and was exhibited in Paris as one of t he “French masterpieces found in Germany”.

3 “The painting along with dozens of other artwork stolen by the Nazis was later acquired by Emil Georg Buhrle, a Swiss industrialist, art collector of German origin and CEO of the armaments company Oerlikon, a wartime supplier of the German military. The painting remains part of the E. Buhrle Collection in Zurich.”

NB: The painting was featured in the 2014 film, “The Monuments Men,” (starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett).

DON’T MISS THIS SELF-PORTRAIT — IT’S IN THE FOGG! ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER RENOIRS

1. Interesting to contrast this one with the later self-portraits of 1899 and 1910.

2. He also did portraits of fellow artists Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley.

3. Other Renoirs in the Fogg include: portraits of Victor Choquet and Madame Pierre Henri Renoir.

LISE TROHET — IN MORE THAN 20 PAINTINGS OF RENOIR BETWEEN 1866 AND 1872

1. “Trohet began modeling for Renoir when she was about eighteen and he was twenty five.”

2. Nature of the relationship unclear. They may have had two children together, one of whom died in infancy.

3. Trehot married Georges Briere de l’Isle in 1883 had four children, two sons and two daughters, to whom she bequeathed two Renoir paintings, “Lise Sewing.” (above) and “Lise in a White Shawl.” Both are now in the Dallas Museum of Art.
