Liberal Arts Blog — Wednesday is the Joy of Science, Engineering, and Technology Day

Today’s Topic — The Tesla Cybertruck — An Eyesore on Wheels or a Space Age F-150?

A blot on the landscape! Are your eyes offended by the cybertruck? Do you feel visually assaulted? Well, I do. And this morning I had to let off some steam, do a little research, and find out how many of my readers share my visceral reaction. To me, a Tesla Cybertruck is a glimpse of dystopia.

Experts — please chime in. Correct, elaborate, elucidate.

“CORNERS LIKE ITS ON RAILS” (2012) — Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla (in case you have been asleep for the last 20 years)

1. “Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s ideas for a pickup truck were first stated publicly in 2012, envisioning a “Tesla supertruck with crazy torque, dynamic air suspension, and corners like it’s on rails”

2. “In a 2014 interview with CNN, Musk stated that the Tesla pickup would be the equivalent of a Ford-150.”

3. “Tesla initially planned to produce the vehicle in 2021, but it entered production in 2023 and was first delivered to customers in late-November 2023.”

“WET NELLIE,” A CUSTOM BUILT SUBMARINE FROM THE JAMES BOND FILM “THE SPY WHO LOVED ME” — Musk’s inspiration

1. “Wet Nellie” is named in reference to Little Nellie, an autogyro featured in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, which was itself named after actress and comedian Nellie Wallace.”

2. “Wet Nellie” was in turn inspired by a Lotus Esprit — a version of which appeared in the film “Pretty Woman” after Ferrari and Porsche declined the product placement opportunity because the manufacturers did not want be associated with soliciting. prostitutes. Lotus saw the placement value with such a major film and supplied a Silver 1989.5 Esprit SE.”

3. In “Pretty Woman” the line “It corners like its on rails” is featured twice — first a line by Vivian (Julia Roberts) then repeated later by Edward (Richard Gere). See below.

“BUILT FOR ANY PLANET” — from the Tesla website — and its “basecamp” expands into a living space - only $2975 on top of the base price of around $61,000

1. “11,000 lbs towing capacity. 340 miles estimated range. 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds”

2. “No paint, no chips” — “an ultra-hard stainless-steel exoskeleton helps to reduce dents, and long term corrosion. Repairs are simple and quick.”

3. “Shatter resistant armor glass can resist the impact of a baseball thrown at 75mph or Class 4 hail. Acoustic glass makes the cabin as quiet as outer space.”

NB: The cybertruck’s bed is called a “vault.” Much sexier don’t you think?

Yes, your Tesla Cybertruck really can double as a camper

Elon Musk warned of Cybertruck headaches, consumers’ debt woes, and a ‘stormy’ economic backdrop on Tesla’s earnings call. Here are his 14 best quotes.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“Make your own Bible. Select and collect all the words and sentences that in all your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.”

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

My spin — then periodically review, re-rank, and exchange your list with those you love. I call this the “Orion Exchange” because seven is about as many as any human can digest at a time. Game?

YOUR TURN

Please share the coolest thing you learned this week related to science, engineering, or technology.

Or, even better, the coolest or most important thing you learned in your life related to science and engineering.

This is your chance to make someone else’s day. Or to cement in your mind something that you might otherwise forget. Or to think more deeply about something dear to your heart. Continuity is key to depth of thought.
