Liberal Arts Blog — Saturday is Sports, Dance, Fitness, and All Things Physical Day
Today’s Topic: “When One Simple Word Defines Steph Curry’s Leadership with the Warriors” (NYT)
Steph Curry, 37, is known as the greatest shooter in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
He is 37 years old and his nickname is “Chef Curry.” He is famous for popularizing the “three pointer” and for his inspirational leadership.
“He is a four-time NBA champion, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, (MVP), an NBA Finals MVP and a two-time NBA All-Star Game MVP… Curry has the highest free-throw percentage in NBA history (.911) and has led the league in three-pointers made a record eight times.”
So what’s the magic word that defines his leadership? “Joy.” Which is a fancy word for “Fun.” So how does he do it?
Today, a few notes. Who has been the most inspiring leader in your life? What one word best sums up why?
Experts — please chime in. Correct, elaborate, elucidagte.
“HE WANTS TO BE THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD BUT HE ALSO WANTS TO BE THE BEST TEAMMATE IN THE WORLD” (Jim Fox, Warriors assistant coach)
1. “There’s this saying; “Great leadership is about allowing others to shine.” And that’s Steph.” (Lachlan Penfold, Warriors head of physical performance)
2. “He’s able to meld work and play” (U’Ren, former executive director of basketball operations for the Golden States Warriors)
3. “Arguably the hardest-working guy I’ve ever been around.” (Damon Lee, Warriors guard)
“HE LEADS BY EXAMPLE AND GUYS FOLLOW HIM BECAUSE HE PUTS THE WORK IN.”
1. “He’s the most confident — genuinely confident — athlete I’ve ever been near.” (Luke Loucks, Warriors assistant coach)
2. “He is trying to kill everyone. But he does it with a smile on his face and joy.” (Loucks)
3. “He’s not bothered by failure or discomfort. He’s fueled by an internal drive that burns without you seeing it.” *Bruce Fraser, assistant coach)
NB: The average height of an NBA player is 6'7". Curry is 6' 2".
“HE’S JUST TRYING TO BE THE GREATEST HE CAN BE AND MASTER EVERYTHING” (Penfold) — In the photo below the other guy is Lebron James in case you were wondering.
1. “If everyone else sees this guy, who is already at the top of his game, trying to become better in different ways, then it inspires others to become better.” (Penfold)
2. Have you ever turned a weakness into a strength?
3. Have you tried to master every little detail of every part of a job in your department so if an emergency happens you can fill in for whoever is out of the office?

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“Make your own Bible. Select and collect all the words and sentences that in all your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
My spin — then periodically review, re-rank, and exchange your list with those you love. I call this the “Orion Exchange” because seven is about as many as any human can digest at a time. Game?

YOUR TURN
Please share the coolest thing you learned this week related to sports, dance, fitness. Or the coolest thing you learned about Sports, Dance, of Fitness in your life — whether on the field, on the dance floor or in the gym, whether from a coach, a parent, a friend, or just your own experimentation.
This is your chance to make someone else’s day. Or even change their life. It’s perhaps a chance to put into words something you have never articulated before. And to cement in your own memory something cool you might otherwise forget. Or to think more deeply than otherwise about something dear to your heart.
