Thinking Citizen Blog — Friday is Education and Education Policy Day
Today’s Topic: The High Standards and Expectations Thing, the Distillation Thing, the Daily Thing
If you were to summarize what you have learned about education in three points, what would they be?
Today, three thoughts. Experts — please chime in. Correct, elaborate, elucidate.
HIGH STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS ARE THE KEY TO HIGH PERFORMANCE
1. Applies equally to athletics, music, art, academics.
2. Most important of all is morality.
3. The face of morality is good manners.
NB: Fake it to make it.
DISTILLATION IS THE KEY TO CRITICAL THINKING — FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS
1. The key to justice is gratitude.
2. The key to economics is time.
3. You teach and learn by example.
NB: So how do you allocate your time to maximize gratitude? How about allocating to each day of the week one of the seven joys of life?
THE DAILY THING, REPETITION IS THE KEY TO LEARNING, THE 10,000 HOUR RULE JUST GETS YOU TO A BASIC LEVEL OF COMPETENCE, YOU MUST KEEP ON GOING
1. Juggling just three balls seems impossible at first. But after 1,457 (+ or — a few thousand) failures, magically something happens and you are off to the races.
2. Ditto for a tennis serve.
3. That is if you focus on the process. And don’t give up.
NB: What was your pivotal experience on this front?
QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“Make your own Bible. Select and collect all the words and sentences that in all your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
My spin — then periodically review, re-rank, and exchange your list with those you love. I call this the “Orion Exchange” because seven is about as many as any human can digest at a time. Game?

YOUR TURN
Please share the coolest thing you learned in the last week related to education or education policy. Or the coolest thought however half-baked you had.
Or the coolest, most important thing you learned in your life related to education or education policy that the rest of us may have missed.
Or just some random education-related fact that blew you away.
This is your chance to make someone’s day. Or to cement in your own mind something that you might otherwise forget. Or to think more deeply than otherwise about something that is dear to your heart.
