Today’s Topic: The Seven Republicans: Heroes? Traitors? Opportunists?
Seven Republican Senators voted to convict Donald Trump. Were they heroes deserving a place among the pantheon of great Senators who had the courage stand up against their own parties? Or were they “Republican In Name Only (RINO)” traitors who should be “primaried” out? Or, were they simply opportunists? Experts — please chime in. Correct, elaborate, elucidate.
ONLY ONE OF THE SEVEN REPUBLICANS WILL FACE VOTERS IN 2022
1. Two are retiring — Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Richard Burr of North Carolina.
2. Only Lisa Murkowski of Alaska (above) faces re-election in 2022.
3. Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Susan Collins of Maine, and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana don’t face re-election until 2026. Cassidy won re-election in 2020 by a margin of 40%. Sasse won by 38%.
NB: Mitt Romney is up for re-election in 2024. In 2018, he won re-election by a margin of 31%.
NORTH CAROLINA AND LOUISIANA
1. The North Carolina Republican Party unanimously voted to censure Burr (above)
2. The Louisiana GOP was also unanimous in its denunciation of Senator Cassidy.
3. Burr’s vote was the biggest surprise.
TOOMEY, SASSE, ROMNEY
1. Although Toomey (above) voted for Trump he was appalled by his behavior after the election which “betrayed the confidence that millions placed in him.”
2. Sasse: “politics isn’t about the weird worship of one dude.”
3. Romney: the only Republican to vote for conviction in Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2020. It is worth remembering, too, that Trump won Utah with 58% of the vote in 2020.
